Have you ever seen a Soviet or Communist Chinese military parade?  So
precise and technical, everyone marching in lock step, raising their
feet high up in the air. Step-raise. Step-raise. Step-raise. These
sorts of movements are highly sought after by dictators everywhere.
But bear in mind that while marching straight on the beat is great for
autocracies is isn't as useful for tango. In this class we'll explore
syncopations, or beats between the beats in the tango music. If this
is not something you are familiar with already, after this class will
hear tango music differently, or I'll shave my beard off. We will
start of with anatomy of tango beat structure, and then go through
different movements that naturally align well with syncopations in
tango music. The goal of this class is to get you started exploring
the inner side of the tango beat on your own.

7:30 - 9:00pm Universal Tango Technique for Both Leaders and Followers - All Levels - Homer Solo
Homer will explain various exercises and drills that are considered universal concepts for both leaders and followers to master.  The world between being a leader and being a follower is closer than you might imagine. For beginners and more experienced dancers alike (especially those who are having a hard time getting to the next level) this class is for you.  Be prepared to work hard and enjoy it at the same time!

9:00 - 1:00am EXTENDED Milonga with tentative performance by Homer + Cristina and DJ Homer Ladas.

Saturday, May 12:

2:00 - 3:30pm Elegant Turn Transition Class (Close to Open Embrace) with Leader and Follower Embellishments (Int/Adv) Cristina and Homer will develop two beautiful transitions between close and open embrace turns via both an ocho and a leg-wrap.  They will sprinkle the movements with a few generous embellishments for leaders and followers!

3:45 - 5:15pm The General Theory of Blending Leader's and Follower's Sacadas (Very Advanced - Partner Required*) This advanced class will develop the foundation for creating the flow in continuous sacadas for leaders and followers.  It will then branch out into often unexplored territory showing how to stay connected and at-ease during the most creative sacada endeavors...  You must have some experience with leader's and follower's sacadas on the social dance floor to attempt this class.  Not for the faint of heart! *If you are not an advanced dancer, you may take this class at any level provided that you have a partner that you will stay with for the whole class. If you need help finding a partner, you may post on the Providence Tango facebook page or email Leslie.

5:15 - 7:30pm Semi-Supervised Practica - Homer & Cristina will be around to help & answer questions for the first 30 minutes or so and then may decide to dance and/or take a break.

Free Musicality Class + Jam Session with Homer Ladas, Carlos Moreno + Others:
7:30 - 8:30pm Free Musicality class
This 1-hour class is open to all dancers, spectators, and musicians alike.  It will combine live and recorded music as necessary to explain each concept. Carlos and Homer will lead a small group of tango musicians in explaining two main areas of importance in traditional tango music and Golden Age dance orchestration. The first area is the break down of several fundamental rhythmic elements common to highly danceable tangos, valses, & milongas. The second area is focused on the specific signatures that stylistically define the Golden Age orchestras (including endings, instrumentation, form, solos, fills/transitions, experimentation, and use of various rhythms). There will be dancing (if you're a dancer).  If you're an interested musician come and join in (play with us what you can while we explain several tango concepts).  No partner required.

8:30 - 10:00pm Tango Jam session where spectators and dancers are welcome to watch/dance/etc!
See Homer's website with Traveling Jam description and music:
http://theorganictangoschool.org/Traveling_Jam

Instructors:

HOMER & CRISTINA LADAS work towards the fusion of all tango concepts via the 'one tango' philosophy in an attempt to reduce barriers that may inhibit themselves or other folks from really finding their own dance. Each with over 10 years of experience emphasizing a fusion of social tango ideologies, they like to dance & teach a variety of connected, musical, dynamic, interesting, creative, liberating,  ideas, techniques and movements. It has been said, on more than one occasion, that few dancing couples improvise with such skill, personality, and fluidity of movement.  As teachers they are committed to creating a positive class environment where small epiphanies can & do occur in their students.

Dancing Rhythm and Melody (All levels) with Rebecca Shulman, followed by the Tango Incident Milonga with DJ Rebecca.

"Rebecca Shulman is internationally regarded as one of the most influential teachers and dancers of current times. In the 1990s, she and Daniel Trenner ignited the growth of many tango communities across the country as a result of their inspiring teaching, including at the historic Stanford Tango Weeks.  Their dance, grounded in the traditional roots of Buenos Aires tango, was flavored with dynamic creativity for non-traditional possibilities.
In NYC, Rebecca is the coordinator and co-founder of this country's most extensive tango program at Dance Manhattan.  She is also a co-founder of Tango Mujer, the famed all-women tango performance group.  Rebecca's "Follower's Technique" video is renowned, as well as her other instructional videos (see iTangoCafe.com ). Rebecca's creativity and improvisational skills are extraordinary.    She is highly sought after for her clear instruction on improvisation, technique, adornments and musicality." Hseuh-tze Lee
Rebecca's teachers include Mingo and Esther Pugliese, Gustavo Naveira and Olga Besio, Tete and Maria, Juan Bruno, and Antonio Todaro. She has performed with the finest dancers of her generation, and given workshops across the U.S. Her dance partners after Daniel have included Omar Vega, Metin Yazir and Constantin Rueger
In recent years Rebecca has been dancing, teaching, and learning with Evan Griffiths.

In the last two Fridays of July (Friday teaching series will be on
vacation through August) we will finish up phrasing and deal with
syncopations (or syncopas): a different way of dividing up beats than
you may be used to. While syncopas can be expressed using the steps
you already know, we will also explore some new steps that are
particularly well suited to expressing syncopas.  We will explore
these rhythms and steps from both leader's and follower's perspective:
how to lead them, how to follow them, and what to do if you are not
lead them when you want to be.

New series with Kirill Shklovsky Musicality for Leaders + Followers: Phrasing, Rhythms, and Follower Voice. This class is appropriate for all dancers who have completed the beginner series.

Class description: Tango is stepping to the music. In this series we will be working on the "to the music" part. For leaders, the goal is to convey something more interesting than the basic beat to your partner. We will suggest new ways of hearing the music and do more with what you already have - exploring how to put your steps to better use, making them more expressive and purposeful. For followers, we will work on understanding musicality so that we can be conversation partners and "get the joke" of the dance. We will also work on developing the follower voice, that is, contributing our own ideas to the dance and the relationship between the follower voice and the interruption of the lead (a.k.a. "The Scale of Naughtiness").

Tone and Connection:
Tango is a duality in itself, created from oppositions, contrasts and divergent energies. The man and the woman; proposal and listening; passion and suffering ... Thereby contrasts should be present in the dance and are necessary to keep the nature of Tango. Those are tools available to us and from which we can inspire. In our body, in our interpretation and in the movement. To achieve those 2 elements, we need to develop the posture. Using the floor and the body to achieve a better balance, connexion and internal dynamic that is needed for movement.

Xavier is available for private lessons. Contact him directly to schedule: murdyn@hotmail.com

Xavier Vanier has an extensive background in music and martial arts that spans nearly two decades.  This experience has granted him a facility both in his understanding of the music as well as in his movements.  He began his tango studies with the widely respected Marika Landry, where his ease with the dance became immediately apparent.  Within a few short years of study, he began teaching at Tango Fabrika in Montreal and was already becoming well known throughout North America.

Xavier continues to be passionate about teaching, dancing, and learning.  Having recently spent several months in Buenos Aires studying with Gaston and Moira, he is more inspired than ever and is in increasingly high demand at events around the country.

Canyengue is the way that Tango was danced in the 1920s and early 30s. It was this original style which took Paris and the world by storm. It is questionable how accurately it is represented by its current practitioners, but generally we can say that dancers use close embrace with and in an offset V, small steps and bent knees. It is danced most fittingly to music by the old guard; Francisco Lomuto, Francisco Canaro (early in his career), Roberto Firpo, and Juan de Dios Filiberto.  Learning canyengue today helps more experienced dancers achieve a more relaxed and grounded dance, and it's easy and fun, allowing more time and space to play.

Vanja and Alexis are available for private lessons before class on Friday and Saturday.  Contact them directly to schedule: alexis@panix.com  vanja.modzelewski@gmail.com

Vanja Modzelewski  is a highly experienced dancer in both - open and in close embrace. Her proficiency in the various styles of tango along with her sophisticated musicality has made her one of the better known female dancers in the US. Vanja's dance style is characterized with fluidity and sensual elegance. She has a profound knowledge of movements and partner connection and is a sought after lead who has been teaching group and private classes in tango with a partner and on her own for over 8 years. Currently Vanja is working together with Alexis Rosen. During the past years, among others, she has taught and performed with Constantin Rueger (Germany), Robin Thomas (NY), Murat Erdemsel (Washington, DC), Ney Melo (San Francisco), Hernan Brizuela (Buenos Aires), Armando Orzuza (Buenos Aires) and Junior Cervila (Buenos Aires).

Alexis Rosen
has been dancing Tango for eight years, and teaching in New York City for the last three. He first gained notice as an original and creative leader of Tango Nuevo. However, in the last couple of years he has focussed closely on close embrace as well. Alexis believes that great dance is built on musicality, connection to the partner, and fundamental movement technique. Many of his classes start with a specific sequence of movements, which are then used to explore those three topics in depth. The first teachers to strongly influence Alexis were Robin Thomas and Mario Consiglieri. While he has learned from numerous other teachers in Buenos Aires and the U.S. since then, the biggest influence on his dance comes from the many great followers he has danced with, including his partner Vanja.

After years of travelling round Europe and the United States, Marika and Mauro decided to form a dancing couple and join the dance school Montreal Gotan. Their aim is the connection and creativity, teaching an updated classical Tango, and giving the students the elements to achieve a personal style.

Marika and Mauro provide their students the possibility of getting a strong dancing communication. Dancers found comfort in the physical space and with their dancing partner, with a great earth connection and movement fluently. With a great physical consciousness, students work on their body control achieving different dynamics in their movements without loosing the typical sensuality of Tango.

Raphael's playful approach to tango emphasizes the subtleties of a deep connection and helps dancers discover their musical personas, find their own path to surprising their partners and renew their dance.
Influnced by his extensive background in martial arts and gymnastics, he naturally grew away from parkour into a more improvised and less dangerous lifestyle choice. While he's based in Montreal, he regularly teaches at various tango festivals in the USA and Canada from San Francisco to New York.
Inspired, amongst others, by Stéphane Villeneuve, Marika Landry and Tomas Howlin, he's one of the most daring tango teacher in Northern America.

Also, a special reading of Violet and Durant's new Tango book:

Dyv Saraza's new novel explores the transnational experience of Argentine Tango. More than an elaborate and difficult dance, tango is a culture of intimacy, desire, and dignity. Aleph Bravo Tango is also perhaps the only text ever written about tango which never uses the word ‘passion.’ No mere romance or memoir, the intricately woven stories take you to tango’s true mysteries — the elation, the frustration, the compulsion. This is the tango that changes lives.

“...an unforgettable journey to an underground world ... a breath of fresh air to the genre of novel.”   — Anahid Aramouni Keshishian

“This book didn't just make me laugh. It also made me feel mad, happy, nostalgic, empathetic, represented, respected, proud... It  broke my heart and then mended it. If you want to know what happens to those who have been seduced by tango, look no further…but beware, you may find that there’s a tanguero in you too, and after that, there’s no going back.”   — Barbara Salas

“Exquisite.”   — Kristina Olsen

Adam Hoopengardner excels in many styles of tango. His philosophy of tango is centered on the energy one feels from one's partner, and believes this should inspire the style and movement of the dance. He is confident dancing in open or close embrace and is cherished by followers for his comfortable, clear lead, his creativity, and inspiring musicality. When teaching he is able to transmit his mastery of the complex concepts of tango while retaining his innate humor and humility. He bases his classes on the abilities of his students and is able to help them expand their skill and understanding of the dance.
Adam has worked across the US, Canada, Germany, and Poland teaching workshops and at festivals often returning more than once. He is based in New York and Berlin. He has performed and worked with some of todays leading ladies of tango including, Cigdem Tanik, Brigitta Winkler, Rebecca Shulman, and Silvina Vals.

Ciko's motivation to pursue tango has been the connection to another soul & body, as well as her own, through a music that inspires her. During her visits to Buenos Aires she focused solely in the dance in its original grounds exploring and studying both traditional and nuevo tango roots which developed the Argentine quality in her dance. She embraced both open and close embrace which allowed the ability to move fluidly between the two and be more dynamic and versatile. Her technique gives her a non-restrictive connection with various dancers. Her dance is defined by its sensuality, creative playfulness, musicality and elasticity.
She emphasizes the importance of a good technique with a comfortable, musical walk over complicated moves. Her goal as a teacher is to bring her students’ personality out in their dance by teaching them the music and the concept of countless possibilities the dance offers. She cannot over emphasize the value of being an active follower which makes the dance much more interactive and fun.
She has worked across US and Canada teaching workshops and at festivals. Has worked and performed with powerful leaders such as Adam Hoopengardner, Felipe Martinez, Robin Thomas, Evan Griffiths and Daniel Tuero.

Teaching now for almost 8 years, Rebecca is well known in United States for her comprehension of many styles of tango, as a versiltle dancer, and a strong female lead. In 2004 she started working internationally.  Teaching recently in many of India's burgeoning communities. In the last year she has been teaching tango at Southern Oregon University in Ashland.

Eric Lindgren

Eric Lindgren's experience dancing in the milongas of Buenos Aries and in the States has made him familiar with many different styles of tango.  Drawn by his own rigorous aesthetic toward the most beautiful movements, he possesses an incredible patience for teasing out the mysteries of what makes tango feel wonderful.  His devotion to exploring fine details of placement, dynamic, quality of movement, is inspiring.  Eric has a deep appreciation for the joy and challenge of dancing tango in the small and shifting spaces of the social dance floor and for the focus and creativity that this requires. This has led him to pursue movements that allow for the fullest expression of the music and dynamic within the couple while being well suited for a crowded floor. What Eric most wants to share with other dancers are the things which work best on the social dance floor and feel great.

December 5th and 12th:

The Alexander Technique for Life and Tango: Finding Poise in Motion Two Fridays with Pamela Slavsky

As dancers, we want to improve our technique, enjoy our dancing more, and avoid injury.  We know that in practice these simple goals have multiple interpretations, are subject to opinion, and sometimes seem in conflict.

In this seminar, you’ll be introduced to the principles of the Alexander Technique, a method for learning how to use your mind to free your body to operate with elegance and efficiency. The Technique has comprehensive usefulness throughout daily living, but in the century since its creation has found a special attraction for artists, performers and athletes.

The Alexander Technique offers a point of view that can have broad application in how we approach our goals in tango, as well as specific understanding about the dynamics of bodies in motion.  We’ll look at how the principles can help create focus and short circuit stubborn habits in order to reduce unnecessary tension, improve stability, and allow greater freedom of motion.  Ultimately, these important factors will increase comfort and communication in our dancing, and can open new possibilities for self expression.

On Dec. 5th Steve Slavsky will be our special guest DJ for the Tango Incident.

Classes are on Dec. 5th and 12th 7:00 - 8:30. Class level is suitable for anyone currently in the monday Continuing Basics class or the Friday Intermediate class. $15 no class cards.

November 28th:

Kirill is one of our favorite people to dance with, the class topic will be "Fun things to do without going anywhere".  Those of you who have experienced a crowded dance floor will value this class!  Kirill will also help guide the practica and DJ the Tango Incident.

7:00 - 8:30 "Fun things to do without going anywhere - Interesting moves that you can lead anywhere, and proper shaping, dynamics and response for followers and leaders." Damian started dancing in 1991, studying extensively with  "El Pibe Palermo,"  Gustavo Naveira, and Mariano "Chicho" Frumboli. Shortly after, he began teaching tango in different cities around Argentina.  He has taken part in Tango Discovery in Argentina, invited by Mauricio Castro and then toured Central America and Europe. Together with Dutch and French dancers he took part in "Tangokobinat," a tango festival presented in Germany and assisted Fabian Salas in CITA, the annual tango convention in Buenos Aires. Recently he has been teaching extensively in Europe.  Damian's dance is characterized by a masterful combination of nuevo tango elements with traditional tango aesthetics. Seamless transitions between the various elements and a keen sense of musicality are emphasized in his dance and are applied in his teaching, training, and dancing.

Starting her tango career in Portland (OR), tango has now taken Jennifer all over the world.  Jennifer has taught  at festivals and givenworkshops around the world with known tango masters Alex Krebs, Robin Thomas, and her current partner, Damian Lobato, from Argentina.  Jennifer's dance is characterized by her desire to strive for versatility. She believes it is integral to master not only close and open embrace, but also everything in-between.  After having a connected and comfortable embrace, nothing is more important to Jennifer than the music. This is transmitted in her teaching, as she approaches every class with a strong command over the music. She has extensive experience DJing traditional and alternative milongas in tango communities worldwide.

Jennifer and Damian will also be available for private lessons. Contact Ellen to schedule.

CARLOS & TOVA MORENO

Tova and Carlos merge the grace of tango's past and the innovations of its present with the connection and musicality that has always defined the tango. As they flow between open and close embrace, their style showcases extremes found in traditional and modern tango music. They mix deep, powerful elements with small playful movements; brow-furrows and secret smiles. For them, the dance is nothing if it doesn't reflect the varied texture of a good tango song.

Tova & Carlos Moreno - Boston

The Morenos started dancing tango together in late 1997 in Seattle, WA, a hotbed of tango learning and experimentation. They became professional tango instructors in Baltimore, where they established a tango community that continues to grow and thrive.

They understand the dance in many ways and are able to successfully teach many kinds of learners. Students express gratitude for T & C's fresh, funny, clear and well-structured teaching.

"EncanTango" is Debora Blake's new documentary film on the world of the Argentine Tango. Filmed across Europe, it explores the fascination with tango far from its origins in Buenos Aires and closely in tune with the personal experiences of those who've been drawn to it. Debora intimately explores the tango's intriguingly universal appeal, capturing its sensuality in the performances of professional dancers and musicians and contrasting that with the difficulties encountered by its aficionados as they strive to master not only the dance but its language and codes.

"EncanTango" is 86 minutes of discovery, sprinkled with humor and filled with emotion.

Please join us for a special screening of "EncanTango" at ProvidenceTango followed by a Q&A with Debora where we'll discuss the film and the fascination surrounding the Tango and share our respective experiences.

Sherri and Stephane have been dancing tango since 1999. Tireless social dancers, they can be seen in festivals across North America, dancing the night away.

Their main thought is that tango should be fun! When teaching, they focus on strong fundamentals to foster the understanding of the dance. They devote equal time to explaining both leading and following techniques. Their goal is to allow any dancer, whatever his preferred style (close, open, crazy, contemplative...) to feel more comfortable improvising with his/her partner.

Thankyou to everyone for making the 3rd Annual Alternative Tango Festival, May 2006  such an outstanding success.

It was great to see so many old friends, to dance with even more new ones, and to share ProvidenceTango with each of you. Thank you for spending the weekend with us, sharing meals and so many dances. We truly appreciate your patience and tolerance with regard to the extreme heat and humidity; not to mention the abnormal "growth" on our dance floor. We're in the process of correcting both situations.

Thank you to the wonderfully talented instructors (Homer Ladas, Mariana Galassi, Jaimes Friedgen and Tova & Carlos Moreno) and DJ's (Homer Ladas, Jaimes Friedgen, Shorey Meyers and Lori Coyle) who inspired us and kept us on the dance floor.

A special thanks to the volunteers who went above and beyond the call of duty to keep us all happy, hydrated, and stress free. And to our local community members who served as surrogate hosts, your contributions were priceless.

Keep in touch to see photos and performance videos from the Festival. And if you have any photos or videos you'd like to share please send them our way.

Planning has begun for ProvidenceTango's New Years 2007 celebration. Keep your email boxes open for details. Registration Opens June 15, 2006.

In the meantime, please use our Anonymous Feedback link (or email thuy@providencetango.com) to let us know how we can improve the Alternative Tango Festival for you next year.
